Diamond Lane
Trifold Sewing Card

Dancing Diamonds ... Plan on using different color combinations of fabrics for the individual diamonds. We selected blues and combined those strips for a blue diamond, reds for another diamond, and so on. Background fabrics include some that are sewn together into strip sets and some that remain one piece of solid fabric.
For a smaller version, use six strip sets, and plan on having four large diamonds plus two half-diamonds on each side. This would be a 48" x 48" quilt.

This is a technique sewing card, so the directions for Blossom do not contain specific measurements or amounts of fabric–merely suggested amounts. The finished size of my quilt is 51" x 62". Depending on how many "rounds" you cut and sew, and the amount of background fabric you add to the end of the rows, the size of your quilt will be different than mine. Templates are given for the centers–which are either large centers or small centers. I used two large centers and three small centers for the rows in my quilt. To try the technique–do the smaller center and make a pillow.

Flutterby Potholders
Tri-Fold Sewing Card

The butterfly shape is perfect for a potholder, as it folds easily over a handle or over the edge of a dish. Our butterfly can be made two ways. In version I, decorative shapes are fused onto a background fabric and stitched around. In version II, a printed fabric is used and the decorative shapes are top-stitched in place. Each version features Insul~Bright inside, which insulates against the heat. An extra layer of batting has been added to give the butterfly more dimension.

Select your theme print (we used same design but two different colorways) for the five large triangles
(L and M) in the center of the quilt. Next you will be choosing solids and prints to use in the strip
sections. The prints are from three different color families in the example, red, gold, and purple, and the solids are accent colors from the same color families. The quilt has eight sections, which will be sewn together in strip sets, cut, and then sewn with other units to complete the quilt. The strips are cut either 1 1/2" wide (the solids) or 2 1/2" wide(the prints).

A combination of lights, mediums, and darks from one color family creates a stunning quilt.
Solids are added for an accent with the prints. The "background" of the quilt consists of
light and light/medium fabrics cut into large triangles and sewn together, making the larger diamond shapes. 2 1/2" strips from the dark/mediums and darks are the "sashing" strips between the blocks, and the blocks are sewn together in diagonal rows.

Gypsy Shawl
Medium Sewing Card

Finished sizes: 26” x 71” (54” fabric), 21” x 71” (42” fabric)
The Gypsy Shawl can be made out of rayon, voile, or cotton. The rayon and voile are softer, and both drape beautifully. Version I (shown in the cover photo) is made with rayon. The ends can be left clean or finished with a variety of trims: vintage, knitted, or crocheted lace; or ribbons inserted into the seam. You could also add purchased bead or fringe trim to each end of the shawl.

A Technique Pattern
Intermediate Quilting Level

The diamond and square shapes open the door for several options in constructing the blocks. Looking at the diamond blocks in this quilt, there are some using two 60º triangles sewn together to create the diamond, and others have the diamond shape with strips sewn around each side of the triangles. The side pieces are added to each side of the triangles, and then they are sewn together, creating either square or rectangle shaped blocks. The blocks with the squares in the center (set on point) are put together differently. Oversized triangles of background are added to the squares (with or without border strips), and then they are trimmed to the desired size.

Our girls are wearing skirts made of voile, which is a soft and flowing cotton fabric that is 54" wide, so one width will make it full enough. We used two pieces of voile so it would not be see-through. On the two smaller sizes, the top layer is hemmed up so the bottom layer shows like a trim would. On the larger skirt, the two layers are the same length.
